Call Me, Maybe Not: The Lost Art of the Business Phone Call

The ring of a telephone used to mean something. It demanded our attention, promised connection and typically required a response. Now, it’s often met with suspicion, dread or a panicked swipe to “decline.” In today’s workplace, the once-glorious business call—the cornerstone of professionalism, negotiation and relationship-building—has become an artifact, like the fax machine.

We think it’s time to bring back the telephone. As professionals who understand the value and impact of communication—a JAMS neutral and a PR strategist—we’ve honed our skills at drafting effective emails and documents, holding virtual proceedings, pinging colleagues and jumping from Zoom meeting to Zoom meeting. Virtual meetings have become the new normal—and in many ways, they’ve expanded what’s possible. We can present, screen-share and collaborate across time zones with ease. But not every conversation needs a calendar invite, a backdrop, a studio light or a “Can you hear me now?” moment. Sometimes, the fastest path to clarity is simply a voice and a phone.
