New York Arbitration Week 2025

JAMS is proud to sponsor New York Arbitration Week (NYAW), taking place November 17–21, 2025. During the week, the JAMS New York Resolution Center will host a panel titled “Tariffs on Trial: Arbitration in the New Trade Era,” featuring Ambassador (Ret.) David Huebner, FCIArb, C.Arb, FCollArb, presented by JAMS, Ciarb and the Ciarb Brazil Branch.

Immediately following, a joint program co-hosted by the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC), Columbia Law School, and JAMS will be presented: “When East Meets West: Comparative Analysis of Arbitration in China and the U.S.” with Joe Tirado as a featured speaker. The session will be followed by a networking reception with drinks and light bites.

Elsewhere during NYAW, Laura C. Abrahamson, Esq., C.Arb, FCollArb will join a panel presented by ArbitralWomen to discuss advancing women in arbitration and addressing systemic bias, while Conna A. Weiner, Esq., FCIArb will contribute to a discussion on optimizing Procedural Order No. 1 to enhance arbitration efficiency and fairness.

In addition, Thomas J. Stipanowich, Esq. will speak on a mediation-focused panel at Fordham Law School’s Annual Conference on International Arbitration and Mediation.

The New York International Arbitration Center (NYIAC) and the New York Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArbNY) are pleased to continue their joint leadership of New York Arbitration Week for the seventh consecutive year. Drawing on New York’s position as a global city, NYAW2025 will engage both local and global practitioners, in-house counsel, scholars, and thought leaders to showcase New York City as a leading destination for the international arbitration community. NYAW2025 will feature a diverse range of formats and speakers on a variety of issues.

Although limitation periods apply in arbitration proceedings, there is no universal approach to how it is determined, what limitation period applies, or how it will be enforced by tribunals. Building on a recent report by the New York City Bar Association’s International Commercial Disputes Committee exploring the nuances of how statutes of limitation are applied in U.S. arbitration practice (see here), this panel will explore different approaches to limitation issues across the globe. Speakers will provide insight on how parties and their counsel may enhance predictability in this area as well as considerations for arbitrators when they are presented with a defense that a claim is barred by a statute of limitations.

U.S. tariff and trade measures, often imposed with little warning, are reshaping global supply chains and fueling a surge of disputes. Companies face disrupted contracts, higher costs, and regulatory uncertainty that crosses borders and legal systems. 

A panel of leading practitioners from the United States, Asia, Europe, and Latin America will then examine how tariff shocks and shifting trade rules are testing arbitration’s ability to resolve high-stakes disputes. Power, Gatekeepers, and Representation: Who Really Shapes Arbitration?

This session explores how institutions pave the way forward for appointing more women to panels (i.e., investing efforts to appoint a variety of females including non-partners to build the pipeline). We’ll also explore the double trouble women and diverse attorneys often face if not (yet) partners — receiving fewer or no appointments, and in parallel, not considered for partnership as early or as often as male counterparts.  A focus will be on how the role of arbitrator must be separated from the partner’s role, as the skills are distinct.  Themes to be explored include gender bias & discrimination, work-life balance (and availing oneself of modified work schedules to balance family), leadership gaps, and pay disparities.
